"Arctic Ship Coordination during IPY" (ASCI) is an initiative to facilitate optimal use of ships and other platforms to meet the scientific goals for Arctic Ocean studies during the International Polar Year.

One of the objectives of the IPY is "a defined period polar snapshot that will provide a crucial benchmark for detecting and understanding change in comparison with past and future data sets" (IPY Science Plan). A multitude of Expressions of Intent (EoIs) were submitted to the IPY Joint Committee describing contributions to a synoptic survey of the state of the Arctic Ocean climate and ecosystem. To accomplish this goal in the spirit of the IPY, coordination of field activities is required.

This website is a backbone of ASCI. By sharing information it aims to help cut down on duplication and to utilize limited resources most efficiently.

Please note: Only if YOU send us YOUR plans the website can be up to date in order to
provide detailed information about planned IPY cruises and the state of planning (see
2007
, 2008, 2009);
provide a forum about needs of programs and about possibilities for groups or individuals to join in planned activities;
inform about meetings for coordination (see Related Links).

We collect and publish information - you are welcome to use them to increase efficiency of your effort.
